How we picked

We ranked five stores by how well they sell downloads, templates, e-books and small courses, not by the overall score on each review. We weighed what you keep from 100 US card sales of $10, whether you pay anything before your first sale, who handles sales tax and VAT, and how fast money reaches you. Every number here comes from our platform reviews, and our scoring method explains the overall scores beside each pick.

Platform and plan Monthly plan Fee per sale Keep of $1,000 When you get paid
Ko-fi Gold $12 0% $929 Instantly, to PayPal or Stripe
Stan Store Creator $29 0% $909 Manual cash out, $10 minimum

Gumroad, direct sale $0 10% + $0.50 $791 Scheduled, $100 minimum

These are arithmetic on each platform’s published fees as of October 2026, with card processing included.

Why is Payhip the best platform for selling digital products?

Payhip ranks first because it costs nothing to start, gives every feature on every plan and takes on the tax work that trips up small sellers. The Free plan takes 5%, Plus costs $29 a month for a 2% fee, and Pro costs $99 a month for 0%. Plus beats Free once sales pass about $967 a month, and Pro beats Plus above $3,500.

Payhip acts as the reseller for digital sales to EU and UK buyers. It applies each country’s VAT rate and files the returns every quarter. Payhip also collects sales tax as a marketplace facilitator in the US and a digital platform operator in Canada. Each sale goes straight into your own PayPal or Stripe account, so there is no Payhip balance to cash out.

We rank Payhip above Ko-fi, which scores 7.2 overall to Payhip’s 6.6, because Payhip is built as a store. Courses with quizzes and certificates, coupons, an affiliate program, upsells and email marketing all come on the free plan. The gap is discovery. Payhip has no marketplace, so every buyer comes from your own audience.

Is Stan Store worth $29 a month for digital products?

Stan Store is worth it once you sell more than about $615 a month from a social bio link, the point where its flat fee beats Payhip’s 5%. Stan takes 0% of sales, so $1,000 in $10 sales leaves about $909 after Stripe, one payout fee and the $29 Creator plan.

The Creator plan covers downloads, lead magnets that collect emails, a course builder, paid call bookings and memberships on one page. Discount codes, upsells and email broadcasts need Creator Pro at $99 a month. Stan creates and manages your Stripe account, so you cannot bring your own. Card sales collect in a Stan balance that you cash out by hand, all at once, from $10, for 0.25% + $0.25 per cash out.

Stan scores 6.0 overall to Ko-fi’s 7.2, losing points on discovery, payouts and ownership. We still rank Stan higher for product sellers, because Stan is built to sell products, with downloads, a course and booking slots side by side on one page, while Ko-fi’s shop sits behind a tip page. It keeps $909 to Ko-fi Free mode’s $891 at this size. Skip Stan if you have no audience yet, because it has no free plan and no marketplace.

Is Gumroad still worth using in 2026?

Gumroad is worth it for a first product, or for a seller who wants tax handled everywhere. Gumroad charges no monthly fee and takes 10% + $0.50 per direct sale, plus 2.9% + $0.30 in card processing, which leaves about $791 of $1,000. The fee drops to 5% + $0.50 after $20,000 of sales in a calendar month.

Gumroad has acted as merchant of record since January 1, 2025, so it calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your sales worldwide. Its Discover marketplace can sell to buyers who have never heard of you, for a flat 30%. To get listed you need $100 in genuine sales and a verified account, which takes about 3 weeks on average.

Gumroad scores 5.8 overall, the lowest here, and we still rank it above Ko-fi and Podia. Gumroad has the highest discovery score of these five, and its tax handling covers every country, where Payhip’s covers the EU, UK, US and Canada. The costs are real, though. Scheduled payouts need a $100 balance, and the flat $0.80 per sale makes cheap products expensive to sell.

Why does Ko-fi rank fourth for digital products?

Ko-fi is the cheapest store on this list but ranks fourth, because its shop is an add-on to a tip page. Ko-fi takes 5% on shop sales in Free mode, or 0% on Ko-fi Gold at $12 a month, which leaves $929 of $1,000. Gold pays for itself above $240 a month in sales.

Ko-fi’s 7.2 overall score comes largely from 0% one-off tips and instant payouts, and both still help here. Every sale lands in your own PayPal or Stripe account the moment it happens. The shop sells digital files and physical goods with variants and shipping, and buyers keep access to files when you update them. Ko-fi Commissions add slots, up to 12 add-ons and terms buyers accept before ordering, which is why artists who sell prints, files and custom work should look here first.

Who should sell digital products on Podia?

Podia suits creators whose downloads sit next to courses and a community on one site. Podia’s $49 Mover plan takes 5% per sale and leaves about $842 of $1,000, and the $99 Shaker plan takes 0% and lands on the same $842. Above $1,000 a month, Shaker pulls ahead.

Every Podia plan includes a website, blog, custom domain, landing pages and sales tax handling, and sales go straight to your own Stripe or PayPal account. Mover does not support PayPal checkout, and email is capped at 100 subscribers on Mover and 500 on Shaker. Podia ranks last for pure downloads because Mover costs $49 a month once the 14-day free trial ends, whether or not you have sold anything. How to choose a digital product platform

As arithmetic on published fees, a $3 product loses about $1.19, or 40%, on Gumroad, against about $0.54, or 18%, on Payhip’s Free plan with Stripe.
