Our verdict

Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per direct sale plus 2.9% + $0.30 card processing, and a flat 30% when a buyer finds you through its Discover marketplace. On 100 direct sales of $10 a creator keeps about $791. Gumroad has handled sales tax as merchant of record since January 1, 2025, and pays out once your balance reaches $100.

Gumroad keeps 10% + $0.50 of every direct sale, and card processing costs you another 2.9% + $0.30. On a $10 product that is $2.09 gone, so 100 sales leave about $791. Sales that come through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%. That price buys a store in minutes, no monthly fee and no sales tax filings, which is a fair trade for a first product and a poor one once sales are steady.

How much does Gumroad take?

Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 per direct sale as of October 2026, plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30. Discover marketplace sales cost a flat 30% that includes processing.

Sale type Gumroad fee Processing Fees on a $10 sale You keep
Direct, first $20,000 in a month 10% + $0.50 2.9% + $0.30 $2.09 $7.91
Direct, after $20,000 in a month 5% + $0.50 2.9% + $0.30 $1.59 $8.41
Discover marketplace 30% Included $3.00 $7.00

The high-volume discount applies automatically once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, and it resets on the 1st. Discover sales stay at 30%, and the $0.50 per-sale fee stays.

Price matters a lot on Gumroad, because $0.80 of every direct sale is flat. Here is the arithmetic on published fees for a $3 product. The flat charges take $0.80 and the percentage fees about $0.39, $1.19 in all, which is about 40% of the sale. Pricing at $10 or more keeps the fixed charges small.

Buyers who pay with PayPal trigger PayPal’s merchant fees instead of card processing, and Gumroad’s 10% + $0.50 still applies. When you refund a sale, Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded amount but keeps the processing portion. If you use affiliates, the affiliate pays a share of the fees in proportion to their commission.

How does Gumroad handle sales tax?

Gumroad has acted as merchant of record for all sales since January 1, 2025. Gumroad calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your sales worldwide, and the buyer pays the tax at checkout on top of your price.

You do not register or file for those sales yourself. The main exception is physical products shipped to the EU, where customs charges import VAT on arrival. Creators who already file sales tax returns elsewhere can download Gumroad’s reseller certificate to report Gumroad sales as sales for resale. Our creator taxes guide covers the income tax side, which is still yours.

How do Gumroad payouts work?

Gumroad pays out once your balance reaches $100, on a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly schedule you choose. Some countries have higher minimums in local currency.

Each payout covers sales made through the previous Friday. On weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules every sale also sits in your balance for at least 7 days first. US bank accounts are paid on Thursdays, euro, UK, Canadian and Australian accounts on Wednesdays, and PayPal on Fridays. Bank transfers then take 2 to 7 business days to land, depending on the country.

Payout option Who can use it Cost
Bank transfer Most countries No fee listed
PayPal Countries without bank payouts 2% fee
Daily payouts US creators with eligible banks, 4 prior payouts and 60 days of history No fee listed
Instant payouts US creators after one payout and 60 days 3% fee, up to $10,000

Gumroad no longer lets new sellers connect their own Stripe account, except in Brazil. That means your money sits with Gumroad until payout day.

How do you make money on Gumroad?

Gumroad sells digital products and memberships, and both can reach new buyers through Discover. The income streams it supports:

  • Digital products, such as e-books, courses, templates and software
  • Memberships with tiers, recurring billing and free trials of a week or a month
  • Discover marketplace sales to new buyers, at 30%
  • Affiliate sales, where other people promote your products for a commission

Memberships come with sensible controls. If you raise a price for existing members, Gumroad emails them 7 days’ notice first. Upgrades between tiers are prorated, downgrades wait until the end of the billing cycle, and you cannot set a custom billing date or delay the first charge.

Discover has entry rules. Your payout settings must be complete, you need at least $100 in genuine sales, and Gumroad’s risk team must verify your account, which takes about 3 weeks on average. Each product then needs one successful sale, a category and ratings turned on. Products listed on Discover join Gumroad’s affiliate program automatically, and you can opt out. Discover sorts products by category and tags, so specific tags on a product’s Share tab give buyers a better chance of finding it.

Can you take your Gumroad customers with you?

Gumroad lets you export your buyers. The Sales tab downloads a CSV of customers and purchases for any date range, including the email used on each purchase, and each payout has its own CSV with a full fee breakdown.

Billing stays with Gumroad. It is the merchant of record, and for new sellers it takes payments through its own accounts rather than yours. Gumroad’s Emails and Workflows tools let you send updates and scheduled emails to customers, by tier for memberships, but if you switch platforms you will need members to subscribe again somewhere else.

Who is Gumroad best for?

Gumroad suits creators testing a first digital product who want zero setup and no tax admin. You can publish a product, share the link and start selling the same day, and you pay nothing if nothing sells.

It gets expensive at volume and on cheap products. At 100 direct sales of $10 a month, Gumroad’s 10% + $0.50 costs $150 before processing. Creators with steady sales should compare stores that charge a flat monthly plan instead of a percentage, and anyone selling mostly through a newsletter should look at Kit, whose 3.5% + $0.30 includes processing.
