The followers you need to get paid range from zero on Patreon, Ko-fi and Substack to 50,000 for Snapchat’s Monetization Program, with Twitch Affiliate at 25 followers, YouTube fan funding at 500 subscribers and TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program at 10,000 followers as of October 2026. Most big programs also set a views or watch time target, which we think is usually the harder number to hit.
Here is the lowest bar to earn cash on each of the nine platforms.

Which platforms pay with no followers at all?
Membership, tip, newsletter and product platforms set no follower minimum. You can open a page today and take a payment from your first fan.
| Platform | What you sell | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Patreon | Memberships, one-off products | 10% fee for new creators plus processing |
| Ko-fi | Tips, memberships, shop sales | 5% on memberships and shop sales unless you pay $12 a month for Gold |
| Buy Me a Coffee | Tips, memberships, products | 5% fee plus Stripe processing |
| Substack | Paid newsletters | 10% of subscription revenue |
| beehiiv | Paid newsletters | Paid subscriptions need the Lite plan at $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly |
| Gumroad | Digital products | Payouts start once you have $100 in sales and Gumroad’s risk team verifies you |
| Stan Store | Products, courses, bookings | $29 a month, with no free plan |
| Discord | Server Subscriptions | US creators only, with a US bank account and ID |
The same is true of Memberful, Ghost, Kit, Fourthwall, Skool, Payhip, Kajabi, Teachable and Podia. None of them gate earning on audience size. Stan’s help center says you can start selling during the free trial, and Kick, a streaming site, switches on subscriptions after 5 hours of streaming with no follower count at all.
We think this is the most useful fact on the page. The platforms with the highest follower bars mostly pay from ad revenue or reward pools they control, while the platforms with no bar let fans pay you directly at fees they publish. Our best platforms for beginners ranks the easiest places to start.
Do views matter more than followers?
On most big platforms, the views or watch time target is the real gate. Followers are only half of most bars.
YouTube asks for 4,000 watch hours alongside 1,000 subscribers, and new applicants from February 1, 2027 need 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views, as our YouTube Partner Program requirements guide explains. TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program needs 100,000 views in 30 days on top of 10,000 followers, and only pays on videos over 1 minute. Snapchat wants 15,000 hours of view time in 28 days, with 3,000 from Spotlight.
Streaming platforms gate on hours streamed and concurrent viewers instead. Twitch’s 25 followers come with an average of 3 viewers on 4 different days, and Kick’s Partner Program needs 75 average viewers. Spotify counts consumption hours and audience members, not followers.
How many followers do you need on TikTok and YouTube?
TikTok’s brand and shop programs open at 1,000 followers and its main payout program at 10,000. YouTube’s first tier opens at 500 subscribers and its ad revenue at 1,000.
TikTok publishes no follower minimum for LIVE Gifts, but you must be 18, or 19 in South Korea, and eligible to go LIVE, which TikTok ties to account standing and region. Its Creator Rewards Program runs in only 8 countries, and TikTok does not publish its rates. US creators under 5,000 followers start TikTok Shop in a pilot program of at least 30 days with limited features. Our TikTok Creator Rewards Program guide covers the rules in full.
YouTube’s 500 subscriber tier pays 70% of net revenue from memberships and Supers, a split YouTube publishes in its help center. See how to make money on YouTube for each step in order, and YouTube vs TikTok for the head-to-head.
How many followers do you need on Instagram, Facebook, X and Snapchat?
Instagram’s gifts and Facebook’s Stars start at 500 followers, and Instagram’s Live badges list no follower minimum, while X and Snapchat gate their main programs behind invitations or paid subscriptions. As of October 2026, Facebook’s biggest program, Content Monetization, is invite-only with no published threshold.
X’s terms send creators to its Help Center for thresholds. Android Headlines reported 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days, and you must also pay for X Premium. Snapchat’s Monetization Program needs 50,000 followers plus Snap Star status, which Snap grants at its discretion.
For brand deals, the bar is lower. TikTok One projects and Instagram’s Creator Marketplace both open at 1,000 followers. Our guides to how to get brand deals and how to make money on Instagram go further, and TikTok vs Instagram compares the two apps.
How many followers do you need on Twitch, Kick and Spotify?
Twitch needs 25 followers for Affiliate, Kick needs none to switch on subscriptions and Spotify counts listeners rather than followers. Since May 13, 2026, any Twitch streamer who finishes onboarding can receive subs and Bits, but Twitch pays cash only once you reach Affiliate.
Kick’s Partner Program needs 250 followers on top of its viewer targets, and pays per stream from a formula Kick does not publish. Our Twitch vs Kick comparison and how much Twitch streamers make set out what each sub pays.
The Spotify Partner Program needs 1,000 audience members and 2,000 consumption hours in 30 days, and Spotify Memberships need just 100 listeners. Our guide to how much podcasters make covers both.
What should you do before you reach a threshold?
Sell something directly from day one, then switch on each platform program as you cross its bar. A membership or tip page on Ko-fi or Patreon needs no followers, and an affiliate link or a small digital product needs none either.
Followers decide which platform programs you can join. They don’t decide whether you can get paid. For the full list of income streams, see how creators make money, and for growing the audience itself, how to become an influencer.
