The biggest video platform, paying ad revenue and fan funding once you qualify

Our verdict

YouTube keeps 45% of long-form ad revenue, 55% of Shorts pool revenue and 30% of memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. As of October 2026, fan funding opens at 500 subscribers and ad revenue at 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. From February 1, 2027, new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views.

YouTube pays creators 55% of net ad revenue on long-form videos and 70% of net revenue from channel memberships and Supers, and it publishes those splits in its help center. No other big video platform is this clear about what it keeps. The catch is the gate. As of October 2026, ads pay nothing until you reach 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, and that bar doubles for new applicants on February 1, 2027.

How much does YouTube take?

YouTube keeps 45% of long-form ad revenue and 30% of fan funding. Shorts work differently, because YouTube pools Shorts ad money first and then pays you 45% of the share allocated to your channel.

Revenue source Creator share YouTube keeps
Ads on long-form watch pages 55% of net ad revenue 45%
Shorts Feed ads 45% of your Creator Pool allocation 55%
YouTube Premium, long-form 55% of your Premium allocation 45%
YouTube Premium, Shorts 45% of your Premium allocation 55%
Channel memberships 70% of net revenue 30%
Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks 70% of net revenue 30%

YouTube says sales tax, VAT and GST are not part of the revenue it splits, so the percentages apply after tax. Its help center lists no separate card processing fee for creators.

The App Store is the exception. When YouTube tested gift memberships in May 2022, it said the 70/30 split is calculated after App Store fees on iOS purchases, as TechCrunch reported, so a fan who joins in the iPhone app is worth less to you than one who joins on the web. When you ask viewers to become members, send them to youtube.com.

Here is a worked example on the published split. If 100 fans each pay $10 a month for a membership on the web, YouTube’s 30% costs you $300 and you keep $700. That is arithmetic on YouTube’s terms, not a payout record.

How do YouTube payouts work?

YouTube pays once a month through AdSense for YouTube, between the 21st and the 26th, after your balance reaches the $100 payment threshold for USD accounts. Anything under $100 rolls over to the next month.

Estimated earnings for one month are finalized and posted to your Payments page early in the following month. Payment then goes out in the 21st to 26th window if your account has no holds. A balance that crosses $100 during January gets paid at the end of February, and Google says it cannot pay outside that schedule for any reason.

Payment methods depend on your payment address and can include electronic funds transfer, wire transfer, check, Hyperwallet or Western Union Quick Cash. Google mails a PIN to verify your address once your balance reaches $10. If you don’t enter it within 4 months, YouTube pauses monetization on your channel.

US creators should file tax information in AdSense early. Without it, Google may withhold up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings.

How do you make money on YouTube?

YouTube has two entry tiers. Fan funding and Shopping open first, and ad revenue needs the full Partner Program threshold.

Feature Requirement as of October 2026
Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and 3,000 public watch hours in 365 days or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days
Ad and Premium revenue 1,000 subscribers, plus 4,000 public long-form watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days
Shopping and YouTube Creator Partnerships The same 500 subscriber tier as fan funding

Every tier also requires you to live in a country where the Partner Program runs, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features and link an AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube says review usually takes about a month. Channels that go 6 months or more without an upload or a Post may lose monetization. Our guide to the YouTube Partner Program requirements walks through each step.

Ads on long-form videos

YouTube pays 55% of net revenue from ads on your public videos’ watch pages, including when those videos play in YouTube’s embedded player on other sites. Only public long-form watch hours count toward the 4,000-hour bar. Views in the Shorts Feed don’t. For what channels earn per view in practice, see how much YouTubers make.

Shorts

YouTube pools ad revenue from the Shorts Feed, allocates it to channels by their share of Shorts views, and pays you 45% of your allocation. From February 1, 2027, a channel must keep 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to earn from the Shorts Creator Pool in a given month. Channels below that line stay in the program and keep their long-form earnings. The same update adds targeted Shorts ads, which pay a direct 45% share when an advertiser aims an ad at five or fewer channels.

YouTube Premium

Premium members don’t see ads, so YouTube pays creators from subscription pools based on how much Premium members watch. From February 2027, creators share a pool worth 30% of net Premium subscription revenue and a pool worth 60% of net Premium Lite revenue, and Premium Lite expands to every country where Premium is sold. YouTube’s August 2026 announcement put the creator split at 55% for long-form and 45% for Shorts, and claimed creators earned more on average per Premium user than from ads in 2026.

Channel memberships

Members pay a monthly fee for perks you choose, and YouTube pays you 70% of net revenue. Your channel can’t be set as made for kids or carry a significant number of made-for-kids videos or videos with music claims. You must be 18 or older and accept the Commerce Product Module. When a member gets a refund, YouTube takes your share back out of your AdSense balance.

Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks

Viewers pay to highlight a message in live chat, send an animated sticker or tip on an upload, and YouTube pays 70% of net revenue on each. These tools don’t work on age-restricted, unlisted, private or made-for-kids videos, or anywhere you’ve turned off live chat or comments. Super Thanks is not available to music channels under SRAV contracts.

Shopping

Partner Program channels can sell their own merch and join the YouTube Shopping affiliate program to tag other brands’ products. The affiliate program runs in 14 countries, including the US, Brazil, India, Japan and Mexico, and excludes music channels, Official Artist Channels and made-for-kids channels. Each seller sets its own commission rate, and YouTube pays commissions through AdSense 60 to 120 days after the purchase so returns can be reversed. YouTube says it currently passes 100% of merchant commissions to creators in launch markets as a temporary incentive, with 30 days’ notice before that ends.

What changes on February 1, 2027?

YouTube announced on August 10, 2026 what it called the first major Partner Program changes since 2018. Partners must accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027. Anyone who misses the deadline stays in the program but stops earning from the features whose terms they haven’t accepted, until they sign.

  • New applicants for ad and Premium revenue need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Channels already in the program are not affected.
  • Earning from the Shorts Creator Pool requires 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, for every channel.
  • A channel counts as active if it has 1,000 watch hours in 365 days, 1 million Shorts views in 90 days, or uploads 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts every 90 days. Channels that drop below get a 90-day window to recover.
  • Creators who turned on memberships or Super Chat before 2023 must move to the current Commerce Product Module. YouTube says revenue shares and thresholds for those features stay the same.
  • Fan funding, YouTube Creator Partnerships and Shopping keep their 500 subscriber entry point.
  • YouTube says new programs may offer Shopping bonuses, production credits for brand deals and boosts for trend content, with opt-in details to come.

Who is YouTube best for?

YouTube suits creators who make long-form video and want income that scales with views, since ad revenue, Premium revenue and memberships all grow with watch time. Educators, reviewers and anyone whose videos answer searches fit it best. If your channel sits near 4,000 watch hours today, finish before February 2027.

Skip YouTube as a first income source if you need money this month. Ad revenue sits behind the 1,000 subscriber gate, and Shorts-only creators face a 10 million view floor from 2027. If short video is your core format, compare TikTok in our YouTube vs TikTok breakdown.
