How much do podcasters make? Ads, Spotify, YouTube and memberships

By CreatorPaper editors. Independent and unsponsored: no platform paid for or reviewed this page. Checked against official sources on .

Short answer

Podcasters make money from host-read ads, platform ad shares and paid memberships. As of October 2026, Libsyn Ads lists host-read spots at $18 to $26 per 1,000 downloads, the Spotify Partner Program pays 50% of the ad revenue Spotify sells into your show, and Apple Podcasts Subscriptions pay 70% of the price in a subscriber's first year and 85% after. Membership platforms leave about $841 to $900 of every $1,000 fans pay.

Podcasters make money from host-read ads, platform ad shares and paid memberships, and as of October 2026 a 60-second host-read ad lists at $24 to $26 per 1,000 downloads on Libsyn Ads’ published rates. The Spotify Partner Program, run through Spotify for Creators, pays 50% of the ad revenue Spotify sells into your show, and Apple pays 70% to 85% of subscription revenue. No platform publishes what a typical podcast earns, so this page sets out the published rates and the arithmetic on them.

Our view is that most independent shows should stack two of these, one ad source and one membership, because neither covers a small show on its own.

Where does podcast income come from?

Podcast income comes from five places, and each one has a different gate. The table compares them as of October 2026.

Income source Who pays Creator’s share Audience needed
Host-read ads you sell The advertiser 100% of a direct deal None set, but CPM pricing rewards downloads
Spotify Partner Program Spotify, from ads and Premium 50% of ad revenue, Premium video by formula 1,000 audience members and 2,000 hours in 30 days
YouTube Partner Program YouTube, from ads 55% of long-form ad revenue 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months
Apple Podcasts Subscriptions Listeners, through Apple 70% in a subscriber’s first year, 85% after No minimum published
Patreon, Memberful or Spotify Memberships Listeners About 84% to 90% None on Patreon or Memberful, 100 listeners on Spotify

How much do host-read podcast ads pay?

Host-read ads pay by CPM, the price per 1,000 downloads, and recent published rates sit around $18 to $40. The figures below come from ad sellers, so they show what advertisers pay, not what a network passes on to the show.

Source and date Format Published CPM
Libsyn Ads, 2026 guide 60-second baked-in host read $24 to $26
Libsyn Ads, 2026 guide 30-second baked-in host read $18 to $22
Libsyn Ads, 2026 guide Programmatic $12 to $15
Libsyn, September 2024 sales data 60-second spot, average $21.37
Acast, pricing guide presented as 2026 benchmarks Host-read sponsorship $25 to $40

Topic moves the price. Libsyn Ads’ 2026 guide lists baked-in CPMs from $22 for Games and Leisure up to $30 for Business, with Health and Fitness at $27. Acast puts business, finance and B2B shows at $40 or more. Libsyn’s September 2024 average came from actual sales data across its ad network of thousands of shows.

How many downloads does a podcast need to earn from ads?

Ad income scales with downloads, because Libsyn prices a spot by multiplying an episode’s downloads in its first 30 days by the CPM and dividing by 1,000. A show needs thousands of downloads per episode before host-read ads add up to more than pocket money.

This is arithmetic on Libsyn Ads’ published 60-second rate, using $25 CPM, the middle of its $24 to $26 range. It assumes every spot sells.

Downloads per episode in 30 days One 60-second spot Two spots Two spots, four episodes a month
1,000 $25 $50 $200
5,000 $125 $250 $1,000
20,000 $500 $1,000 $4,000

Those figures are before any network or agency share. Selling your own spots keeps the whole fee, while a network finds advertisers and keeps a cut it may not publish, so ask before you sign. Our guides on how to price sponsored posts and how to get brand deals cover pitching sponsors.

How much does the Spotify Partner Program pay?

The Spotify Partner Program pays 50% of the revenue from ads Spotify places in your episodes, on Spotify and on other podcast apps, plus a share of Premium revenue when members watch your video episodes. Spotify does not publish the Premium formula, and audio-only episodes earn no Premium video revenue.

To apply, a show needs at least 3 episodes, 2,000 consumption hours and 1,000 audience members on Spotify in the last 30 days. It must also be hosted on Spotify for Creators or with an outside host that supports the program, and the creator must have a legal address in one of 56 eligible markets. Spotify cut the bar on January 7, 2026 from 12 episodes, 10,000 hours and 2,000 listeners.

Partner Program shows keep 100% of the sponsorships they sell into video episodes. Spotify pays monthly once you reach $10, or $100 for a wire, after a 30-day onboarding period.

Staying in the program has its own rules. A show must publish an episode and earn at least $10 in any 6-month period, and once you earn $1,000 or more in a month, Spotify requires 2-step verification or holds your payouts after 30 days.

How much can a podcast make on YouTube?

A podcast on YouTube earns like any other long-form channel, 55% of net ad revenue once it joins the Partner Program. Podcast episodes count toward the 4,000 qualified watch hours that YouTube’s ad revenue tier requires, along with 1,000 subscribers.

From February 1, 2027, new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 watch hours in 365 days instead. A video podcast close to 4,000 hours should apply before that date. At 500 subscribers, YouTube’s lower tier also opens channel memberships and Super Chat at 70% of net revenue.

What a podcast earns per view depends on its RPM, which YouTube does not publish as a standard rate. Our guide to how much YouTubers make covers RPM and sourced ranges by niche.

How do Apple Podcasts Subscriptions pay?

Apple Podcasts Subscriptions pay creators 70% of the subscription price at each billing cycle, minus applicable taxes, and 85% once a subscriber has a year of paid service. Apple says any other podcast revenue, including ads, “will stay 100% yours.”

To sell subscriptions you join the Apple Podcasters Program, which costs $19.99 a year in the US. You set your own prices, choose monthly or annual plans and can offer free trials, and Apple sells subscriptions in more than 170 countries and regions. On September 22, 2026, Apple announced that video is coming to Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, without a launch date.

Apple’s cut is steep in year one. We would use it as a second door for listeners who already live in Apple Podcasts, not as the only paid tier.

Should you sell podcast memberships on Patreon, Memberful or Spotify?

Pick by how much you earn and who controls billing. As arithmetic on each platform’s published fees, 100 fans paying $10 a month leave you between $700 and $900.

Platform Take-home on $1,000 What you pay
Spotify Memberships $900 10% fee that includes processing
Memberful $843 $49 a month, 4.9% per payment and Stripe’s 2.9% + $0.30
Patreon $841 10% platform fee, 2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment and a $0.25 payout
Apple Podcasts Subscriptions $700 in year one, $850 after 30% then 15%, plus a $19.99 yearly program fee

Patreon gives each member a private RSS link, so they can listen in apps such as Apple Podcasts or Overcast, and creators can switch on syncing with Spotify and Apple Podcasts in Patreon’s distribution settings. Memberful does not host audio. It works with your existing host and creates a secure feed for each paying member, which stops updating if they cancel.

Spotify Memberships launched on October 20, 2026, replacing Podcast Subscriptions. They need 3 episodes, 100 consumption hours and 100 listeners or viewers on Spotify in 30 days. The 10% fee is the lowest here, but the product has no track record yet. Memberful costs less than Patreon once you clear about $956 a month, as our Patreon vs Memberful comparison shows.

Which podcast income mix makes sense?

Start with a membership on Patreon or Memberful, because neither sets an audience minimum and both leave you about 84% of what fans pay. Add the Spotify Partner Program once you pass 1,000 audience members in 30 days, and YouTube if you film your episodes.

Sell host-read ads yourself when your episodes reach a few thousand downloads in 30 days, since that is when Libsyn’s CPM arithmetic turns into real money. Our best platforms for podcasters ranks hosting and paid options side by side.
