Memberful review 2026: fees, Stripe payouts and who it suits

Membership billing on your own site, domain and Stripe account

Our verdict

Memberful charges $49 a month plus 4.9% of each payment, and Stripe's own processing comes on top, so 100 US card payments of $10 leave about $843 of $1,000. In return, members, cards and payouts sit in a Stripe account you own, on your own domain.

Memberful costs $49 a month plus 4.9% of every transaction, and Stripe’s processing comes on top, so 100 US card payments of $10 leave about $843 of $1,000. That is level with Patreon at $1,000 a month and better above it. What the fee buys is ownership. Members pay through your own Stripe account on your own domain, and you can export everything and leave.

How much does Memberful cost?

As of October 2026, Memberful sells one self-serve plan at $49 a month plus a 4.9% transaction fee on each purchase or renewal. You can build and test in test mode for free, and billing starts only when you connect Stripe and go live.

Cost Amount
Standard plan $49 a month, charged after you go live
Transaction fee 4.9% of each purchase or renewal
Stripe processing, US domestic card 2.9% + $0.30, billed by Stripe
Stripe, international card Extra 1.5%
Stripe, currency conversion Extra 1%
Enterprise Custom pricing

Going live is permanent, and Memberful deletes all test members and orders when you switch. Memberful is a Patreon company, and its own docs point creators who want built-in discovery toward Patreon.

The fixed $49 decides whether Memberful is cheap for you. As arithmetic on published fees for $10 US card payments, here is what you keep compared with Patreon’s standard plan.

Monthly revenue Memberful Patreon standard plan
$500 $397 $420
$1,000 $843 $841
$5,000 $4,411 $4,205

The Patreon column includes one $0.25 US bank payout. The two cross at about $956 a month, where Memberful’s 5.1 point lower fee rate covers the $49 plan.

How do Memberful payouts work?

Memberful never holds your money. Members pay into your own Stripe account, and Stripe deposits the funds in your bank on a daily, weekly, monthly or manual schedule that you set.

Stripe says a new account’s first payout usually lands 7 to 14 days after the first live payment. After that, timing follows your schedule and your bank. Memberful adds no payout fee or minimum of its own, and Stripe supplies the exports you need for bookkeeping and tax.

Memberful works only with Stripe. Members can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Stripe’s Link, but there is no PayPal option. Because Stripe cannot collect application fees in some countries, Memberful cannot serve businesses in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico or Thailand. Disputes and chargebacks go through Stripe as well.

How does Memberful handle taxes and failed payments?

Memberful can calculate and collect sales tax, VAT or GST at checkout in the US, EU, UK, Canada and Australia, but it does not file or remit those taxes for you. That job stays with you, unlike a merchant of record such as Skool, which files tax itself.

Tax collection is off by default. You switch it on under Settings, then Taxes, and add each location where your business has a tax obligation. Memberful passes the tax details to Stripe to help with reporting.

Failed renewals get a short recovery window. After the first failure, Memberful emails the member to update their card and retries the charge up to four times, 12 hours apart. If the charge still fails after 48 hours, the subscription is deactivated. Members whose card expires before their next renewal get a reminder email first.

How do you make money on Memberful?

Memberful sells access to almost anything you publish, through subscriptions, one-time payments and downloads.

  • Subscriptions billed weekly, monthly or annually, with free or paid trials
  • One-time payments and digital downloads such as PDFs and MP3s, sold alone or bundled with a plan
  • Group plans that let one account buy seats for a team
  • Choose-what-you-pay plans for donations or supporter tiers
  • Gift purchases, coupons, a built-in referral program and automatic retention discounts
  • Free registration, which captures an email before someone pays

Delivery is where Memberful earns its fee. It protects posts on a WordPress site through its plugin, runs private podcast feeds that members add to their usual podcast app, sends a hosted newsletter and assigns Discord roles by plan. It also syncs members to Kit or Mailchimp and adds checkout links to Squarespace, Webflow, Wix and Weebly sites. If you have no site, Memberful’s own website builder covers pages, posts and custom themes.

What do you own on Memberful?

You own nearly everything on Memberful. Checkout, sign-up and account pages can run on your own custom domain, and transactional emails can go out from your own mail server.

Members’ cards sit in your Stripe account, not Memberful’s. If you move to a new Stripe account, Stripe’s migration tool copies the cards and Memberful resyncs your members. You can export members, orders, subscriptions, metrics and cancellations as CSV files at any time. Do that before closing an account, because Memberful deletes the data when you close it. Free registrations are included, appearing as full member profiles without card details that you can target from the WordPress plugin, member website and newsletter.

That is a sharp contrast with platforms that process payments themselves. Memberful’s docs say it cannot migrate saved cards out of Patreon, so creators arriving from there have to ask members to add a card again.

Who is Memberful best for?

Memberful is best for independent publishers, podcasters and creators who already run a website, earn at least $1,000 a month from members, and want their own brand at checkout and their members in their own Stripe account.

Skip Memberful if you are starting out. The $49 fee is nearly 10% of a $500 month, Memberful offers no discovery, and you need a WordPress site or some time in its site builder before you can sell. Ko-fi or Patreon will get a new creator earning faster and cheaper. Ko-fi Gold in particular charges $12 a month and 0% on memberships, which on our $1,000 example leaves $929, though without a custom domain or Memberful’s publishing tools.

Memberful alternatives

  • Patreon costs nothing up front and adds free members and video hosting, at 10% for new creators. See Patreon vs Memberful.
  • Ghost suits writers who want a publishing platform with memberships built in.
  • Substack is the obvious comparison if paid newsletters are your main product.
  • Kajabi fits creators whose memberships are built around courses.
  • Our best membership platforms list compares them all.

What Memberful gets right

  • Payments run through your own Stripe account, so members' cards stay with you
  • Custom domain for checkout, sign-up and account pages
  • CSV exports of members, orders, subscriptions, metrics and cancellations
  • Plugs into WordPress, Discord, Kit and Mailchimp, and works with Squarespace, Webflow and Wix
  • Cheaper than Patreon's 10% standard plan above about $956 a month in revenue

Where Memberful falls short

  • The $49 monthly fee costs nearly 10% of a $500 month before any other fee
  • No discovery at all, so every member comes from your own audience
  • Stripe is the only processor, and Memberful cannot serve businesses in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico or Thailand
  • Needs a website or time with Memberful's site builder before you can sell

Frequently asked questions

Not for live payments. Every account starts in test mode, which is free for as long as you like, and the $49 monthly fee starts once you connect Stripe and go live.
