One-tap tips, memberships and a shop for a flat 5% fee

Filed under Memberships and tips. By CreatorPaper editors. Fees verified .

Our verdict

Buy Me a Coffee charges a flat 5% platform fee and no monthly fee, plus Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 per payment and a 0.5% payout processing charge listed on its fee page. On 100 US card payments of $10 that leaves about $886 of $1,000.

Buy Me a Coffee takes a flat 5% of every payment and charges no monthly fee, with Stripe’s processing on top. On 100 US card payments of $10, that leaves about $886 of $1,000 once the 0.5% payout processing charge on its fee page is counted. It has one of the smoothest tip checkouts around, but Ko-fi lets you keep more of every tip.

How much does Buy Me a Coffee take?

Buy Me a Coffee charges a 5% platform fee on every transaction, whether it is a one-time coffee, a membership or a shop sale. There is no plan to choose and no monthly bill, and every feature is free to use.

Payments run through Stripe. Buy Me a Coffee’s fee page, last updated in March 2026, lists these charges:

Charge Rate
Platform fee 5%
Stripe card processing 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction
Payout processing 0.5%
Payment from outside the US Extra 1%
Subscription payment Extra 0.5%

As arithmetic on those rates, a $5 coffee from a US fan loses about $0.72 in fees, leaving roughly $4.28. A $25 coffee loses about $2.40, leaving roughly $22.60. The fixed $0.30 is why small coffees give up a bigger share.

You can hand the card fee to fans. A setting called Cover credit card fee decides whether the fee comes out of your earnings or gets added to the supporter’s payment. Buy Me a Coffee’s own example shows a $25 contribution charged at $26.03 when the supporter pays the fee.

Buy Me a Coffee now pays creators in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the EU and the other countries on its Standard list through Stripe Standard accounts, which give you Stripe’s full dashboard. On a Standard account, check that dashboard for the exact processing charges on each payment.

Is Buy Me a Coffee cheaper than Ko-fi or Patreon?

Buy Me a Coffee is cheaper than Patreon for new creators but costs more than Ko-fi, on both tips and memberships. The table applies each platform’s published fees to the same $1,000 from 100 US card payments of $10.

Platform and plan Product You keep from $1,000
Ko-fi, Free mode One-off tips $941
Ko-fi, Free mode Memberships $891
Buy Me a Coffee One-time support $886
Buy Me a Coffee Memberships $881
Patreon, standard 10% plan Memberships $841

The gap on tips comes almost entirely from the platform fee, since Ko-fi takes 0% of one-off tips in Free mode and Buy Me a Coffee takes 5%. On memberships both take 5%, and Buy Me a Coffee’s extra 0.5% payout charge and 0.5% subscription charge make up the $10 gap. Ko-fi Gold, at $12 a month for 0% on everything, would leave $929 on the same memberships.

How do Buy Me a Coffee payouts work?

Buy Me a Coffee pays into a Stripe account in your name, and Stripe then moves the money to your bank. Your first payout waits for a manual account review and typically takes 7 to 14 days in total.

The review checks your page against Buy Me a Coffee’s content rules. Adding links to where you promote your page and your social accounts speeds it up, and the approval only happens once. Its help center says you can request a payout once your balance reaches $10, and that bank deposits usually take 3 to 5 business days after money reaches Stripe.

On a Stripe Standard account you change your payout schedule, bank details and tax information in Stripe, not in Buy Me a Coffee. Creators in India, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea and Türkiye are paid through Stripe Express accounts instead. Every payout runs through Stripe, so creators need to live in a country Stripe supports.

How do you make money on Buy Me a Coffee?

Buy Me a Coffee offers one-time support, monthly support, memberships and a shop, and the same 5% applies to all of them.

One-time support

Fans buy a “coffee” at the price you set, $5 by default, and can choose to pay more. Checkout is one tap with no sign-up, by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Cash App where available. Creators with a US Stripe account and USD pricing can also accept crypto for one-time support and shop orders, settled in dollars. Stream alerts show coffees on screen during streams on Twitch or YouTube.

Supporters can add a written or video message with their coffee, and you can relabel the button as Support, Donate or Tip. A localized pricing setting lets fans view your prices in their own currency.

Monthly support

Since December 2024, fans can turn a one-time coffee into a recurring monthly payment with one click, without joining a membership tier.

Memberships

You can create unlimited tiers with monthly or yearly billing, member limits, discount codes and 7-day free trials, plus one lifetime tier per account. Tiers can be paused for 1, 3 or 6 months, linked to Discord roles and used to gate posts and gallery images. Subscription payments carry the extra 0.5% charge.

Shop

The shop sells digital downloads, physical goods and services with no listing fees. You can cap stock, offer quantity options, set special prices for members and add discounts. Digital products come with an instant download link.

Your supporter list stays yours. Buy Me a Coffee says it does not email your supporters and that you can export the list whenever you like.

Who is Buy Me a Coffee best for?

Buy Me a Coffee suits writers, developers, podcasters and streamers who want a polished tip button and simple memberships live in minutes, with no plan to manage. The one-tap checkout with no fan account is its best feature, and a flat 5% is easy to explain to your audience.

Skip it if price matters most. Ko-fi charges 0% on one-off tips in Free mode and pays out instantly, so on our $1,000 example Ko-fi leaves $941 where Buy Me a Coffee leaves $886. Buy Me a Coffee also does little to bring you new fans, so it works only if you already have readers, listeners or viewers to send there.
