YouTube vs TikTok 2026: requirements, revenue shares and pay

Which should you pick?

YouTube is the better place to earn and TikTok the faster place to grow. YouTube pays a published 55% of long-form ad revenue from 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours, and 70% of web memberships from 500 subscribers, so $1,000 in memberships leaves $700. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days and pays at rates TikTok does not publish, so use TikTok for reach and brand deals.

YouTube is the better place to earn and TikTok the faster place to be seen. YouTube publishes its splits, 55% of long-form ad revenue and 70% of web memberships, while TikTok publishes one split, for subscriptions, and keeps its Creator Rewards and gift rates private. If you want income you can forecast, build it on YouTube and use TikTok for reach and brand deals.

What do you need to get paid on YouTube and TikTok?

YouTube’s fan funding tier opens at 500 subscribers, and its ad tier at 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program and Subscription both need 10,000 followers, and Creator Rewards also needs 100,000 video views in the last 30 days.

Program, as of October 2026 Requirement
YouTube memberships and Supers 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days
YouTube ad and Premium revenue 1,000 subscribers, and 4,000 long-form watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days
YouTube Shopping and Creator Partnerships The same 500 subscriber tier as memberships
TikTok Creator Rewards 10,000 followers, or 50,000 in Japan and South Korea, 100,000 views in 30 days, age 18, a personal account and one of 8 countries
TikTok Subscription 10,000 followers and age 18
TikTok One brand projects 1,000 followers and age 18, plus each brand’s own rules

TikTok’s view bar is far lower. 100,000 views in 30 days is a small fraction of YouTube’s 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. But TikTok asks for ten times YouTube’s 1,000 subscribers in followers, and Creator Rewards pays only original videos over 1 minute, posted in 1080p or higher, that reach 1,000 For You feed views. Duets, Stitches and Photo Mode posts never qualify.

Creator Rewards runs in 8 countries as of October 2026, the US, UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil.

YouTube’s bar rises on February 1, 2027. New applicants for ad revenue will then need 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, and every channel will need 10 million Shorts views in 90 days to share in Shorts revenue. Fan funding thresholds do not change. If you are near 4,000 hours, our guide to the YouTube Partner Program requirements explains why we would apply before February.

How much do YouTube and TikTok take?

YouTube keeps 45% of long-form ad revenue and 30% of memberships and Supers. TikTok publishes only its Subscription split, 70% to you after app store fees, and sets Creator Rewards pay and gift values privately.

Revenue stream YouTube creator share TikTok creator share
Pay for views on longer videos 55% of net long-form ad revenue Creator Rewards, rate not published
Pay for views on short videos 45% of your Shorts Creator Pool allocation Nothing from Creator Rewards at 1 minute or less
Fan subscriptions 70% of net, for web sign-ups 70% after app store fees, up to 90% with a bonus
Live tips 70% of Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks Gifts become Diamonds at a rate TikTok sets

What does $1,000 in fan subscriptions pay?

The table below is arithmetic on published revenue shares, not reported earnings. It assumes 100 fans paying $10 a month.

Platform and case Creator keeps
YouTube membership, joined on the web $700
TikTok Subscription, app store keeps 30% $490
TikTok Subscription, app store keeps 15% $595
TikTok with the 90% bonus, app store keeps 30% $630
TikTok with the 90% bonus, app store keeps 15% $765

TikTok does not say which app store fee applies to your subscribers, which is why the spec table on this page shows no TikTok take-home. TikTok lets you price a subscription from $2.99 to $99.99 a month, and its bonus needs over 10,000 followers, over 100,000 views in the last calendar month and subscriber-only videos that month. YouTube also splits iOS memberships after Apple’s fee, so send members to youtube.com.

YouTube’s ad split allows the same kind of sum. Every $1,000 of net long-form ad revenue pays you $550, and every $1,000 the Shorts pool allocates to your channel pays $450. TikTok publishes no RPM for Creator Rewards, so there is no equivalent sum to do in advance. For what channels earn per view in practice, see how much YouTubers make.

How do YouTube and TikTok pay out?

TikTok pays faster. We score TikTok 6 and YouTube 4 on payouts.

YouTube pays once a month through AdSense for YouTube, between the 21st and 26th, once your balance reaches $100. A month’s earnings are finalized early the following month, so money from a balance that crosses $100 in January arrives at the end of February.

TikTok pays every program into one Balance page, and each program runs on its own weekly, two-weekly or monthly cycle. Creator Rewards pays monthly on the 15th once you have $50, under TikTok’s US terms, and other programs’ minimums depend on your payment method. Withdrawals to PayPal, Pix or a bank are usually processed within 72 hours. If TikTok permanently bans your account, you forfeit unpaid Creator Rewards.

Which grows an audience faster?

TikTok is faster for a brand new account. Both score 9 on discovery in our reviews, but TikTok’s For You feed decides reach video by video, so a new account can reach people who do not follow it.

YouTube rewards patience instead. Educators, reviewers and anyone whose videos answer searches fit it best, and their long-form watch time is what moves a channel toward the Partner Program.

Neither lets you take the audience with you. YouTube scores 2 on ownership and TikTok 1, and neither lets you export a contact list. Our guide on how creators make money covers moving followers onto a list you control.

In the US, TikTok now runs through TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, announced on January 23, 2026. Creator Rewards still lists the US as eligible as of October 2026.

Which features actually differ?

Past ads and subscriptions, the platforms differ on shopping, brand deals and Premium revenue.

Feature YouTube TikTok
Shopping Your own merch, plus a Shopping affiliate program in 14 countries TikTok Shop affiliate links in videos, LIVE and a profile store
Premium revenue 55% long-form and 45% Shorts from Premium pools No equivalent program
Where earnings land One AdSense account One TikTok Balance page

TikTok One is TikTok’s lowest paid door, open at 1,000 followers. It merged TikTok’s Creative Challenge and Creator Marketplace, and brands can invite you or you can apply to open projects. YouTube Creator Partnerships, its brand deal program, opens with fan funding at 500 subscribers. Before you quote a fee on either, read how brand deals work.

YouTube pays Shopping affiliate commissions through AdSense 60 to 120 days after the purchase, and says it currently passes 100% of merchant commissions to creators in launch markets as a temporary incentive.

Which should you choose?

Post on both if you can, and build your income on YouTube. TikTok is where strangers find you fast, and YouTube is where a published split turns views into money you can plan around. Our TikTok Creator Rewards guide covers the other side of that plan.
